German President Steinmeier's State Visit to Australia 3-5 November 2017

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, made a state visit to Australia from 3 to 5 November 2017, at the invitation of H.E. General the Hon Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), the Governor-General of Australia.

President Steinmeier was accompanied by his wife Mrs Elke Büdenbender. This was the first state visit to Australia by a German President since 2001. President Steinmeier visited the cities of Perth (3-4 November) and Sydney (4-5 November).

In Perth, President Steinmeier and the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Prime Minister of Australia, jointly opened the 2017 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference. Steinmeier APRC2 Enlarge image (© BUndespresseamt/ Jesco Denzel) Organised by the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, this historic bilateral event brought together over 1000 international delegates from Australia, Germany and the Asia-Pacific region.

During President Steinmeier’s visit to Australia, a focus was placed on the contribution of both countries to the international order and global issues, such as security policy and the future of the Asia-Pacific region. The German President also enjoyed various opportunities to experience the close and friendly relations between Australia and Germany in the fields of student exchange, “work and travel” activities, arts and culture, as well as urban development.

It was President Steinmeier's first visit to Australia.
