The prize is awarded to young people between the ages of 16 and 30 who are engaged in projects designed to encourage the development of a European consciousness and identity and offering practical examples of Europeans living together as one community.

The European Charlemagne Youth Prize is awarded every year jointly by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen. The three winning projects are awarded prizes of EUR 5,000, EUR 3,000 and EUR 2,000, respectively, the prize winners being invited to visit the European Parliament (in Brussels or Strasbourg). In addition, the representatives of the twenty-seven national projects selected are invited to make a four-day trip to Aachen, Germany. The prizes for the best three projects are presented by the President of the European Parliament and a representative of the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen.

The 2011 European Charlemagne Youth Prize went to Europe & Me, an online lifestyle magazine created by young Europeans for young Europeans. The magazine’s founding team comprised eight people of six different nationalities, its writers and readers coming from twenty different countries. In less than three years, eleven issues of the magazine have been published, reaching a European audience of more than twenty thousand readers.
