For 31 years the German Embassy in Canberra has been offering the annual “German Grant for Journalism” in co-operation with the National Press Club of Australia. The purpose of the grant is to encourage Australian journalists to present issues pertaining to Germany to Australian audiences. Deputy Ambassador Gerda Winkler presented this year's recipient Ms Jessica Sier (The Australian Financial Review) with her official prize certificate on 2 August 2017.

This year’s topic of the grant touches a subject of high interest for many countries and societies, underlined Ms Winkler in her short speech, namely:

“Populism and party dissatisfaction” – the focus being on challenges ahead of the German Federal Election which is to be held on September 24.

As always, the selection of the grant recipient has been carried out jointly by the National Press Club and our Embassy, who were impressed by Ms Sier’s application and her story angles, being an economics and financial markets expert.

The Embassy is very much looking forward to reading her impressions of Germany when she gets back from her travels later this year.
