IMPORTANT INFORMATION – The German Consulate General in Sydney is the new Competence Centre for Legal & Consular Affairs in Australia
As of 1 May 2015 the German Consulate General in Sydney is the „Centre of Competence” for legal & consular affairs in all states and territories of Australia and the Islands of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Nauru.
The German Embassy Canberra will continue to issue passports and travel documents and will process name declarations and birth registrations for applicants residing in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Furthermore it will still certify copies and signatures and issue consular certificates.
The Consulate General Sydney will be taking over legal & consular competences in two steps, from 1 May 2015 and 1 June 2015.
As of 1 May 2015, all passport applications, name declarations and birth registrations will be processed by the Consulate General Sydney exclusively.
In addition the Consulate General Sydney will process visa applications from all Australian states and territories.
As of 1 June 2015, all other legal & consular matters will be handled by the Consulate General Sydney, such as citizenship and inheritance matters, consular assistance for German citizens in an emergency situation / in detention.
The after hours emergency helpline will then be the responsibility of the Consulate General Sydney exclusively.
Any applications and enquiries made at the Embassy in Canberra prior to 1 May and 1 June 2015 respectively will be processed and completed there.
All consular services provided by the offices of the Honorary Consuls will remain the same.
